Disc herniation in dachshunds: understanding the risks and taking the right steps
A slipped disc is probably one of the biggest concerns for dachshund owners. And with good reason: this breed is naturally predisposed to this problem due to its distinctive build, with a long back and short legs.
But it is important to remember one thing: owning a dachshund does not necessarily mean that it will develop a slipped disc. However, it does mean being aware of the breed’s vulnerabilities and adopting good daily habits to minimise the risks as much as possible.

What is a slipped disc?
The spine is made up of several bones called vertebrae. Between each vertebra is a disc that acts as a shock absorber and helps the back to remain flexible. A slipped disc occurs when one of these discs becomes damaged or deformed. Part of the disc may then slip out of its normal position and press on nearby nerves. This pressure on the nerves can cause pain, loss of sensation, difficulty walking or even complete paralysis.

Why are dachshunds more prone to slipped discs?
In dachshunds, slipped discs are particularly common due to their body shape: they have a long back and short legs, which puts greater strain on their spine. That is why it is important to be aware of this condition and to take the right steps in everyday life to reduce the risks.
Certain factors further increase the risks:

  • being overweight
  • a lack of physical activity
  • repeated jumps
  • excessive exertion
  • carrying the bag incorrectly (improper handling or a bag that is too flimsy)

What can you do to minimise the risk of your dachshund developing a slipped disc?
Although it is not possible to completely eliminate the risk of a slipped disc in dachshunds, adopting certain good habits can help protect their spine on a day-to-day basis.

Maintaining a healthy weight
Being overweight is one of the main risk factors. A few kilos of put too much strain on the back and the intervertebral discs. A balanced diet and regular exercise are essential for keeping your dachshund healthy.

Encouraging regular physical activity
Regular, moderate walks and suitable exercise help to gently strengthen the muscles that support the spine. Please note! Excessive physical exertion, such as running for long periods behind a bicycle, should be avoided, as it can weaken your dachshund’s back.

Limit repeated jumps
Repeatedly jumping off the sofa or bed can subject the spine to significant impact. Using ramps or suitable steps helps to minimise this impact and effectively protect your dachshund’s back on a daily basis.

Avoid going up and down stairs frequently
Going down a few steps now and then is not usually a problem. However, repeatedly going down stairs can put a lot of strain on a dachshund’s back and weaken its spine in the long term.

How to carry your dachshund properly
Choose bags specifically designed to suit the build of dachshunds, such as our travel bag available on our website, which ensures optimal support and keeps your pet’s back straight and perfectly supported throughout the journey.

Seek medical advice promptly if you notice any unusual symptoms such as:
back pain, difficulty walking or climbing stairs, weakness in the legs, or when the dog whimpers when picked up. Early treatment can improve the chances of recovery.

Even with all these precautions, some dachshunds may develop a slipped disc due to their genetic predisposition. However, adopting these best practices as part of their daily routine helps to reduce the strain on their backs and contributes to their long-term wellbeing.

Please share your experience of a slipped disc in the comments.
